2019 Denver City Lax Dash 5k

February 12, 2019 4:41 PM

A snow covered City Park, Denver’s most historical open space venue, was the backdrop this past Sunday for the 6th annual Denver City Lax Dash.

The Dash is a 5k fundraising event to support Denver City Lax and their work introducing the sport of lacrosse at no cost and then assisting youth in finding success on the field and in the classroom.  Runners fundraise on behalf of City Lax prior to the event, and a committed and gracious group set a new Dash fundraising record.

The Colorado lacrosse community drives the Dash and runners and supporters were out in force this past Sunday on a brisk but beautiful Colorado morning.  More than 400 boys and girls high school lacrosse players from over 20 high schools joined together with club teams, coaches, parents and players from the youth ranks to run the 5k.

“The Dash is a true feel good story,” commented Denver City Lax staff member and professional player Eric Law who headed up race coordination.  “The Colorado lacrosse community is incredible in giving everyone the opportunity to love this game regardless of resources.”

Raising money, however, isn’t the entire story.  “The Dash has become an activity for the entire community to support the growth of the game in a positive way,” says program director Ben Allison.  “Kids and families from different backgrounds come together to celebrate collectively.”

Next month City Lax will field 16+ boys and girls teams ranging in age from K through 8th while continuing to supporting students that play through high school and college.

Past Denver City Lax student-athletes are now in college, many as first in family attendees.  Two current high school seniors enroll next fall at Johns Hopkins and Richmond respectfully.

Helping making race day a special event were vendors the Denver Outlaws, Motive Pure, Elite Speed, iSplack, and Denver Sports Recovery.

Dash sponsors and partners, all committed to giving back to the community and supporting youth, were LXTC Lacrosse Training Center, Under Armour, Encore Brand Lacrosse and Positive Tracks. For the second year in a row, City Lax has partnered with Positive Tracks, a national non-profit, to support youth runners participating in the City Lax Dash through mentorship and matching donations.

2018 City Lax Dash

February 12, 2016 9:25 PM

A winter wonderland was the backdrop for a record breaking day at this year’s Denver City Lax Dash.

The Dash supports City Lax in bringing lacrosse to urban neighborhoods and assisting at-risk youth in finding success on the field and in the classroom through the sport of lacrosse.

A high spirited Colorado lacrosse community came out in force to assist City Lax in providing access and opportunity to the game.  A beautiful sun-filled Colorado morning greeted runners following an early weekend storm that blanketed race venue Washington Park in snow.

Over 400 boys and girls high school lacrosse players teamed up with a number of youth players, coaches, club teams and college students to run the 4 mile race in support of City Lax. Participants fundraise prior to the event, and this year their collective effort set a Dash record.

“The Dash is driven by Colorado youth wanting to help provide access to the game to kids from all neighborhoods,” said City Lax program manager Eric Law.  “It’s become a true community event thanks to the runners, and also their friends and family that jump in to support.”

The Regis Jesuit Boys Lacrosse program led all teams in the number of runners participating and fundraising. Joe Madden, a Regis Jesuit sophomore, was this year’s fundraising leader and first place finisher in the race.

Dash partners and sponsors committed to youth and giving back to the community were:  Positive Tracks, HeadWrapz, Under Armour, LXTC Lacrosse, and Encore Brand Lacrosse.

Colorado Lacrosse Community Turns Out for 2017 City Lax Dash

February 8, 2016 3:34 AM

An early rising and spirited group of Colorado high school lacrosse players were greeted to a sun-filled Washington Park Sunday morning for the fourth annual Denver City Lax Dash, as players representing a dozen schools hit the running path to support Denver City Lax’s work in assisting at-risk youth in finding success in life through the sport of lacrosse.

The Dash is among the leading, if not largest, high school athletic related charity fundraisers in Colorado, involving more than a 1000 athletes and families and numerous high school coaches since the 5K event began three years ago. The race supports Denver City Lax, an urban lacrosse based organization providing equipment and year-round programming at no cost to boys and girls in underserved Denver neighborhoods.

Lacrosse is the entry point to Denver City Lax’s youth development program. Hundreds of elementary and middle school boys and girls living in neighborhoods that previously were not familiar with the sport participate on youth teams focused on promoting education and life skills development. In addition to lacrosse, year-round opportunities for participants include leadership camps, outdoor mountain experiences, enrichment activities, academic support, college visits and preparation and individual mentoring.

This year’s event was boosted by Premier Dash Sponsor Encore Lacrosse, a Bay area lacrosse and apparel company founded by University of Virginia 3x All-American John Christmas. Encore is guided by the credo Action is Character, and is the place for Team Apparel, Lifestyle Apparel and International Travel excursions with a trip for high school and college players to Ecuador this summer. Two other great companies, StringKing and LXTC Lacrosse, also supported this year’s race.

“The community give-back has been incredible,” says Denver Outlaw MLL championship game MVP Eric Law, who works as the Program Manager for Denver City Lax. “High school teams bond in a team activity while also getting in shape for the season, and it all benefits Denver City Lax. There are not enough thanks for the coaches, players, families, donors and amazing sponsors that have made the Dash a special event.”

High school lacrosse programs raising money for Denver City Lax included Regis Jesuit (boys and girls), Denver East (boys and girls), Arapahoe, Kent Denver, Rock Canyon, Valor girls, Mullen, Prairie View, Alexander Dawson, Wheat Ridge, Cherry Creek, Monarch and Thomas Jefferson.

“I participated in the City Lax Dash because I love giving back to the community and the event is just a great time,” commented Ryan Bergner, a Kent Denver senior on his way to Bryant University next fall.

You don’t have to be in high school or Colorado to help make a difference to Denver City Lax, and donations can be made at any time. Check out the 2017 Dash event page and select any team or runner to support, or simply make a donation through the City Lax website. Your contribution will help kids that would otherwise not be playing find success on and off the field.

Grant Recipient from Bill Belichick & PeyBack Foundations

December 4, 2015 5:11 PM

Sending a shout out to both the Bill Belichick Foundation and the PeyBack Foundation!

They have been fierce competitors for years on opposite NFL sidelines, but Bill Belichick and Peyton Manning are on the same team when it comes to assisting youth in America.  Both football greats have established foundations that support non-profit organizations providing services to children, and Denver City Lax is honored to be a 2015 grant recipient from each.

We are grateful for the generosity of Bill Belichick and Peyton Manning.  The financial assistance provided by their foundations truly helps Denver City Lax and many other youth organizations.
