Screen Printing Workshop

- 4:02 PM

Last week we took a group of kids to Ink Lounge to learn how to screen print our very own t-shirts.  The group learned everything from how to expose the screen print design to how to pull the ink onto the t-shirt.

The screen printing workshop was not only fun but also brought out the kids’ artistic and entrepreneurial sides.

Thank you to Andrew Baker for helping setup the event and putting together some awesome T-Shirt designs.

Backpacking & Camping Trip

August 6, 2015 - 7:45 PM

A group of five Denver City Lax participants went on a week long backpacking and camping trip on the Oh Be Joyful Trail near Crested Butte, CO.

City Lax partnered with Big City Mountaineers, a non-profit organization who specializes in outdoor wilderness expeditions for urban youth, in order to make the trip happen.

The 7 day trip combines a mentoring programming into an outdoor wilderness expedition where each member of the trip feels empowered.  Each participant is physically challenged, and mentally challenged to think critically about their community, responsibility, and their personal self-discovery.

Thank you to Big City Mountaineers and the amazing trip leaders (Mike Wagner, Phil Mesdag, Zach Taylor, Mike Reilly, and Dan Reilly) who made the trip a special experience!

Also, special thank you to Phil Mesdag for providing all of the great photos from the trip!

Thank you Daniels Fund

August 5, 2015 - 9:34 PM

Denver City Lax sends a huge thank you to the Daniels Fund for awarding Denver City Lax a very generous grant in 2015.  Their support has been a tremendous boost in helping Denver City Lax continue making a difference in the lives of Denver’s youth.

Denver City Lax is a sports-based youth development organization creating educational and life opportunities for boys and girls in underserved neighborhoods in the Denver area.  All participants are given the opportunity to play regardless of financial ability and the Daniels Fund helps make this possible.

The Daniels Fund grant also enabled Denver City Lax to host their first Summer Academy in 2015, a six-day, 5-night intensive lacrosse and leadership experience held on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus.  To read more about this tremendous week, see Summer Academy 2015.

Bill Daniels, a pioneer in cable television known for his kindness and generosity to those in need, establish the Daniels Fund to provide grants and scholarships in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.  For more information, visit

Thank you again to the Daniels Fund for their compassionate and generous support.

Warmest regards,

Denver City Lax staff and families

2015 City Lax Summer Academy

August 3, 2015 - 6:35 PM

We just wrapped up our first ever City Lax Summer Academy!

The camp was a six day, 5 night intensive lacrosse and leadership experience that included middle school boys and girls from Denver City Lax, and several other urban lacrosse programs from around the country.

Summer Academy took place at the base of the Flatiron Mountains on the beautiful CU-Boulder campus.  Participants were pushed to challenge themselves both on and off the lacrosse field.  Lots of daily lacrosse combined with enrichment activities introducing participants to new ways in reaching their individual potential.

Outdoor experiences included a low and high ropes Challenge Course, requiring personal awareness, communication, teamwork and problem solving; and a mountain excursion to Lincoln Hills Cares near Nederland introduced participants to fishing, horseback riding and archery plus a hiking tour of this scenic property with historical African American roots.

Classroom sessions on Nutrition, the Growth Mindset and Building Character, had participants learn about and discuss fueling the body and mind, taking ownership of oneself, decision making, changing habits, and developing a willingness to risk new challenges and activities to stretch and expand existing knowledge and skills.  A college campus tour gave participants a first hand perspective of a university environment and a sense of what their academic and social lives might look like.

A major theme at Summer Academy was that everyone has the ability to grow and make positive changes.  The final evening on the lacrosse field CU head coach Ann Elliot helped sum up the necessary tools.  It takes a positive attitude, hard work and perseverance by never giving up to discover our interests and realize our individual talents.

Thank you to the amazing camp staff members and donors who made this camp possible!
