Week Long Backpacking and Camping Trip!
A group of five Denver City Lax student athletes just returned from a week long backpacking and camping trip in Medicine Bow National Forest in Wyoming. City Lax partnered with Big City Mountaineers (BCM), a non-profit organization who specializes in outdoor wilderness expeditions for urban youth, in order to make the trip happen. Read up and take a look at some of the images below that captured the once in a lifetime experience.
Individuals grow the most when they are put in unfamiliar and uncomfortable situations. Immediately the group experienced a culture shock. We were in a new environment with no electricity, running water (bathrooms/drinking water), shelter, or phone/communication with the outside world. Each of us also had 30-50 lbs backpacks on with all of the food, supplies, and gear we would need while in the backcountry. The first two days were the hardest, but the group began to bond and acclimate to the surroundings.
Every day each youth participant was assigned a new role – navigator, water master, educator, cook, sweep. These roles, combined with the overall experience, gave each City Lax student athlete the opportunity to hone their leadership, communication, decision making and responsibility skills.
The beautiful setting made it easy to appreciate where we were. Over the course of the week, we saw few people as we hiked roughly five miles a day through forest and around the base of massive mountain peaks. Each night we set up camp at one of the many beautiful lakes created by the melting snow from the mountains above.
There were many challenges that the group of City Lax participants, and adults, overcame throughout the week. Some were physical, but many were mental. Being away from family and the amenities of home were difficult, but the group pushed through the challenges and showed a great deal of perseverance.
We’d like to give a special thank you to Big City Mountaineers, and the three adults who led our week long adventure – Andrew, Chris and Carl!
